Give them a task that mirrors real work. Good options:
- Build a data table with sortable columns, pagination, and a filter that operates client-side. Evaluate: component structure, performance considerations, and how they handle edge cases.
- Refactor a provided component that has obvious problems: prop drilling, unnecessary re-renders, tight coupling. Evaluate: their diagnostic approach and the decisions they make.
- Add a feature to an existing small codebase without breaking the existing code. Evaluate: how they read unfamiliar code and integrate new functionality cleanly.
The point is not to trick them—it is to see how they work, not just whether they can answer prepared questions.
The TypeScript depth test
For any senior role, TypeScript is a requirement. Test for real depth:
